St Anselm’s wins £20,000 award

St Anselm’s Parish Church, Hatch End, was awarded a grant of £20,000 towards urgent restoration work by the Willesden Area Council of the London Diocese.

Generally, only loans are provided, but they have awarded the maximum grant available to St Anselm’s project.  “We are absolutely delighted because we will be able to make a start on the most urgent roof repairs now” he said.

The church had also applied to the Government’s ‘Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund’ but been unsuccessful as the programme was heavily over-subscribed. So this news has really given parishioners a lift.  Many local people, who may not attend the church regularly, would also be pleased to see this magnificent building maintained in good repair. A popular venue for the community, the Parish Hall is used for different activities in its pretty tranquil setting.

The total cost of the most urgent works recommended by the Diocesian architect was in the region of £62,000 (plus architects fees where necessary and VAT, some of which may be reclaimed). Other recommendations included a structural survey, damp course work and extensive repairs to brick and stone work. After a recent CCTV survey underground, damage has been pinpointed to sections of the main drainage system which have to be addressed before further works on the brickwork and roof repairs can continue.

“We plan to rectify the most urgent building defects and take action to avoid others.  Our small reserves are close to depletion so we shall be applying for Lottery Funding as well as promoting our restoration fund locally.  We hope to set up a “Friends of St Anselm’s” group and have already received some donations from the Hatch End Association and several individuals” said Jill Whitehead, Parish Administrator.

A number of fund raising initiatives are under way and there is an online giving website through ‘BT my donate/The Parish Church of St Anselm, Hatch End’
